When shopping online (or in stores) it can be tricky to know if you’re getting the best price possible, especially on common household items that are generally on the more affordable side anyway and easy to add to your cart. While being an Amazon Prime member may make it tempting to order everything from the online retail giant, there are some things that aren’t worth buying there and that you can cheaper elsewhere—like Walmart.
Amazon and Walmart seem to match each other price-wise on products like electronics and kitchen gadgets, but Walmart usually has better deals on household items, school supplies, and certain workout equipment. So the next time you’re ordering toilet paper, paper towels, duct tape, and similar items, don’t default to shopping on Amazon or you could miss out on potential savings.
Worried you’ll pay more or wait longer with Walmart? Don’t! You get still get free two-day shipping on most items at Walmart as long as you spend $35 or more—and you don’t need a membership, which might be the perfect move for us non-Prime shoppers. Plus, if you don’t actually have time to shop in stores, but don’t want to wait to get your stuff, you can always order online and select in-store pickup at Walmart. As long as your local store has the items in stock you can get it as soon as a few hours after you order, and you don’t have to waste time running up and down the aisles to track down what you need.
To help you avoid overpaying on the things you need, we did some digging to determine what’s better to get where and found more than a handful of items you’re better off buying from Walmart. Here are 10 things you should always buy at Walmart over Amazon:
1. The best paper towels
Everyone knows that, generally, when you buy something in bulk, you save money. But you can save even more on paper towels by buying them at Walmart. A 12-pack of Bounty Essentials Select-A-Size, the best paper towels we’ve ever tested, costs $18.99 at Walmart but $20.45 at Amazon. So while you’d only be saving about $2, that does add up over time considering you’re already always buying paper towels.
2. School supplies everyone needs
When it comes to buying school supplies, you should always check Walmart before mass-ordering supplies on Amazon. The same exact Five Star Note notebook is nearly half the price on Walmart compared to Amazon. Although you’re only saving about $2, if you buy two, you’re effectively getting one for free. And if you’ve got school-aged kids, these notebooks can really add up so why not take the opportunity to save?
3. The best affordable TVs
You can score an incredible price on a TV at Walmart. Not only do they have great sales ever so often at the Savings Center, but you can sometimes find impressive TVs priced lower there than Amazon—like the )55-inch Vizio E-Series (2018), our favorite TV under $500. Although it’s currently unavailable on Amazon, it was previously priced at over $500. So, if you thought about buying it, you would have saved $50 by getting it at Walmart instead.
4. The best laundry detergent
If you need to stock up on detergent, Walmart is your place to go. Persil is the best laundry detergent we’ve ever tested, and it’s significantly cheaper at Walmart compared to Amazon At Amazon, a 64-load jug of Persil costs $22.50, but you can get the same bottle at Walmart for $11.97, which is nearly half off and can save you a ton in the long run.
5. The best trash bags
Planning a party? You’re going to want to load up on trash bags at Walmart. Even when using Amazon’s Subscribe & Save program, which will save you 15% on recurring orders, you can save even more by ordering Glad ForceFlexPlus trash bags from Walmart. Our favorite trash bags only cost $15.38 for 68 bags there, compared to the $18.04 Subscribe & Save price at Amazon ($18.99 otherwise). With either Amazon option, you’re still saving more than $3 by shopping at Walmart.
6. The best toilet paper
Walmart might just be the #1 place to take care of your #2—in terms of pricing on toilet paper anyway. Charmin Ultra Soft is a popular brand of TP (and the best toilet paper we’ve ever tested) and it’s much more affordable at Walmart than Amazon. You can get 12 mega rolls for $12.97 from Walmart, but that pack typically costs $21 at Amazon. With $8 in savings, you can afford to buy a few extra rolls at Walmart, which means more time before you run out.
If you’re brave enough to order a mattress online, you can save a chunk of change by ordering certain models on Walmart over Amazon. For example, a full-sized 12-inch Spa Sensations Memory Foam Mattress is $259 at Walmart, but it’s $64 more at Amazon. With those savings, you might even be able to sleep better on your new mattress and get some new sheets and pillows while you’re at it. While other mattress brands are comparable between the two sites, you can still definitely save on a Spa Sensations at Walmart.
Sweet dreams aren’t complete without a good pillow and some savings, especially if you are also thinking about buying that mattress we just talked about. The Xtreme Comforts Shredded Memory Foam Pillow is the best pillow we’ve ever tested and it’s about $5 cheaper on Walmart than it is on Amazon. The savings may be small in this case, but it’s still a better deal to order one (or more!) from the big box store.
Walmart might be one of the better places to purchase exercise equipment if you’ve always wanted a home gym. Not only can you pick it up at a store if you’re worried about damage from shipping, but you can also find some equipment at a lower price than you’ll see at Amazon. For example, this Gold’s Gym Trainer 430i Running Treadmill costs $479.92 at Amazon, but it’s just $394 at Walmart. Now, this isn’t the case with every treadmill for sale on these sites, but if you price compare before you buy, you might be able to find a better deal no matter which retailer you go with.
10. Duct tape
Duct tape is essential for momentarily fixing a repair, making a prom dress, or just about anything else—and you can get our favorite affordable duct tape at a better price at Walmart over Amazon. The Duck Tape Max Strength is $7.99 at Walmart, but it’s $2 more at Amazon. You might as well save a little on a one-time purchase that will probably last you a while.
